Orbit / Eye Socket Surgery

Orbit / Eye Socket Surgery

Several medical conditions and facial trauma can involve the eye socket. Surgery and/or medication may be necessary to treat these problems.

Hyperthyroidism is the most common disease that effects the eye socket. Signs and symptoms include: bulging of the eyes, redness and swelling of the eye and eyelids, double vision, eyelid retraction with inability to close the eyelids. Controlling the thyroid abnormality while protecting the eye surface are the primary goals until the thyroid is stable. Surgery to decompress the eye socket or reposition the eyelids may be necessary depending on the severity of the disease.

Other conditions that may effect the eye socket:
Inflammation, tumors, trauma, abnormal blood vessels, sinus disease.
