Blepharitis is often associated with rosacea, an inflammatory condition of the facial skin. It causes the formation of a dandruff-like material on the eyelashes resulting in chronic eye irritation, dry eye and eyelid redness.
Treatments include daily eyelid scrubs, warm compresses, artificial tears and occasionally, oral medication. Omega 3 fatty acid supplementation (fish oil, flax seed oil) can alleviate symptoms and decrease inflammation.
Blepharitis is present in almost all eyelids, bunt not everybody experiences symptoms. Drynenss and irritation are most commonly found in Caucasian, blue-eyed patients of Northern European descent.
